Author's Preface to The Elegy Of The Lyre (Sonnets)

[China] Dazang Chen

Either it rises or it falls. The frustration I experienced and the ignorance I felt in my youth, made me devoted to poetry and love with no choosing. These two themes, which at that time were two sides of the same question, both had a heavy flavor of life for me. Poetry makes me spiritually transcended, guides me to gain knowledge and rationality; And love allows me to transcend and sublimate. The ultimate aim of both is to build a spiritual home of my own. I thought there was no greater happiness in life than this.

If poetry were a religion, I would convert to it all my life, and let me live in a devotional tour of the love of the soul. The pure love I had experienced in my young age (and into my youth), including the love of poetry, had brought me joy to my soul, but had also brought me great wounds and pains. The world leaves too little room for poets, and the pursuit of metaphysical love is far more painful than joyful. However, as long as the poet can experience a moment, even sadness, even sorrow, it is eternal. Youth has been going like water, now, as long as the heart gives birth to some beautiful longing, or the memory of once truly pure, the more i can realize the cold and cruel life. All the happiness and all the feelings in the past have been irreparable.

Love and poetry to me, is more like a casual game of fate, and my body and mind accept them without defense, my heart can not help to bear all their heavy, and they give me full longing, let me mused, depressed until sad, but also arouse my struggle against life itself. The good things, in the world, including the joy of the soul, always so fleeting, deserve to be celebrated by the heart and preserved forever. Those unforgettable wounds, are still lingering in the body; the heavy sorrow that is captured by empathy — including love, including life, including death, including fate... they remain in the depths of my mind and will jump out of me from time to time to remind me and sting me. And the only way I can fight is to stay true to that feeling and try my best to write down one poem after another.

The reason why I’ve an idea of designing The Elegy Of The Lyre, such a love elegy, also a soul elegy, first of all, I hope to find a reasonable way to relieve my personal inner spiritual conflict and trauma, which is almost self-evident physical instinct. Secondly, I hope to make a phased summary of the past life process and experience, and seek a precipitation in poetry art and an experiment of unique artistic expression. Finally, the greatest theme of this collection is to explore the inner integration of love and life, love and fate, love and poetry, love and beauty, poetry and soul, poetry and fate, and so on — although this is almost a grand wish that cannot be realized.

I am not a poet who holds any idea of poetry school, nor am I a formalist. However, in the boundless ocean of poetry, with my extremely limited reading and exploration of Chinese and foreign poetry and my extremely shallow ability to comprehend poetry writing, I seem to have found a relatively appropriate and elegant form of poetry writing — sonnets, to write and express my dream like spiritual world. Most of the poems in this collection adopt the form system and poetry stanza segmentation of “four-four-three-three-sentences”, and a few poems are segmented according to the potential sense of language and poetry stanza. In addition to the form of the poem, in the expression of the content of the poem, my sonnets have vaguely formed my own rules of writing poetry, and it seems that I have touched a certain skill of how to rise and fall. As for this part, it is a deeper problem of Chinese sonnet creation skills, which needs to be thoroughly summarized and refined by me, so I will not thoroughly explain it here. On the whole, I write completely free sonnets, not the strict and rhythmic Western sonnets, and my best Chinese sonnets so far have a certain internal structure. With a quiet and pure state of mind, I will examine and observe the colorful and varied images in my heart, and continue to complete the exploration of Chinese sonnets, no matter what kind of poems can be done in the end and what the experimental results are.

Finally, I will talk about the naming and origin of this collection. The lyre, as a folk plucked instrument in ancient Greece, is said to be the instrument of the Sun God Apollo's son, Orpheus; The lyre made him a famous luthier, and as soon as he began to play, everything listened his music and was moved. About the lyre, there is also a beautiful and sad love story about the love between Orpheus and the fairy Eurydice (Ευρυδίκη), in which Orpheus saves his wife in the underworld with the sound of the lyre, loses his lover and finally reunites with his lover. The  lyre is also a symbol of the lyric goddess Erato. The lyre is said to have originated during the Renaissance (14th-16th centuries), when paintings focused on religion and Greco-Roman mythology. Therefore, the lyre, the most ancient instrument of elegance, symmetry and simplicity, has become a symbol of beautiful music and beautiful love in the Western art world. For me and my poetry collection, it is the “lyre” that gives me inspiration for all my poems about love, poetry and even beauty to find an image sustenance with the most imaginative space.

The original inspiration for the “lyre” came from a girl I had fallen in love with in college (she had written a poetry collection called the “Lyre”), at that time, I wrote many poems in college, including “Snow Rainbow in Heaven(A Group of Sonnets)”, “The Secondary Rainbow on Birthday”(Sonnets)and “The Broken Poems on the Lyre” (5 Sonnets). Therefore, the original idea of this poetry collection of “The Elegy Of The Lyre”, is also to commemorate several women I have loved or valued. It is these women who have given me the most primitive imagination of love and beauty, and the first impulse to poetry and life.

This sonnet collection of The Elegy Of The Lyre contains a total of 40 sonnets, the first series of which is dedicated to the woman who is related to the Lyre, and all the poems are written for her, and all the elegy are sung for her, and they are called “The Broken Poems On The Lyre”. The second series is “Elegy”, a memorial to all that is good and have gone — here there are songs of love’s sorrow, songs of the soul’s sorrow, songs of the sacrifice of life, songs of the elegy of poetry itself. The third series is the odes (or dedication) to good love and a perfect life, and this series has the least weight of the three series. I put more effort into the first two series, and felt more comfortable to write, and could have produced one or two poems for the future generations, who knows, and the final ode part is not my strong point of writing, so I have to make up for it.

Of course, this sonnets collection The Elegy Of The Lyre is far from to be finished. Here, you only see her in early form. The writing outline I have planned should have the several large sections and hundreds of headings. Due to my strict creative environment and writing conditions, there are always too few times when I can be truly leisurely and not be distracted and there is not much space to be alone and undisturbed — it is not easy to be a truly creative poet, who is not busy with survival and life? Good poetry can only be waited, and it does not that when you want write one, you can write one, and i am waiting until one day all aspects of the conditions are mature, the theme ideas are brewing and forming, then write them. Thank you, everybody!

I would like to express my special thanks to my wife, the poet and translator Sophy Chen, without her help at the threshold of my life, without her care and support for my life, I could not have come to this day, and my poetry collection would not have been successfully translated, edited and published. Thanks for her excellent translation of the poetry collection The Elegy Of The Lyre ! In addition, she also personally wrote the foreword for this collection of my poetry, and carried out a detailed and in-depth professional interpretation of my poem “I’ve Never Wanted to Possess You”(Sonnets), which shows that she is not only an outstanding poet and translator, but also perhaps the most potential poetry critic. I am deeply grateful for her!
