Tragic Role
I can’t look back, even though my legs are numb
I can’t move my heels, not out of cowardice or nostalgia
I’m pricked and abandoned by poisonous hearts
The tree fork sways with blood
Deep autumn becomes despotic
Winter comes early, stirring the body, ejaculating early
Sleeping on ice dregs, the body like cotton
I’m tearing at October, silently enduring, my joints cold
The atmosphere is bound tightly around my chest
Mercy envelops me
Let the wind pluck out each thorn that dehydrates me
Chew up embarrassment and grievances, rotting in the mind
Forgive sunlight, flaunting itself elsewhere
Play well a minor role in a tragic era
Now, tears are medicine
shimmering drop by drop, and healing

First, Get Death Drunk
Tell all flying plants
to crack open each grain of highland barley
The flowers and I have the urge to get wasted
Throw down the shot glasses
One gust of wind and I’m too drunk to turn back
Highland barley flies
and the cold starts to retreat
The heart is like the roasted chestnuts in Huairou
peeling away from the mouth
swallowing and spitting out read gold and silver
Now I can no longer recognize this surface brightness,
this era inundated in poison, waxed with Sudanese red
I’ll only get drunk for the highland sky
only for a cloud that’s far from the branches,
inviting the endless stars to come sit down
I jog out from a gap in the soul
humming moonlit-plated flower songs, first, get death drunk
and sit on a staircase of words
I want to crown highland barley king and butterflies queen

The Autumn Flood and the Beast
On a day in September
with the unbridled scent of fruit,
the east-facing sunlight bends its waist
and squints its eyes to eavesdrop from
the windowsill on the pink voice in that bedroom
When autumn’s shrieks spray from the bed
and the floodwaters from the left swell higher and higher,
the beast riding the water
falls into the first, second, and then the third climax
The deaths of this age are honey-scented

I See This Heart of Mine
This night at three o’clock I see
How it is with this heart of mine
In pieces, a cherry dripping blood
In the tiger’s teeth of a fall heat wave
It leans with beleaguered shoulders
On a cane of resignation
With teeth grimly clenched
Pressing forward bit by bit
No longer when torn apart
Does it writhe in pain
Or bleed unceasingly
Now it curls up in sorrow
Yes, this heart steeped in bitter water
Begins to recover the sweetness
Of spring, summer, fall, winter
Like a placid pool, never grudging the seasons
Once this heart passes fully through
The empty gate of flesh and beyond
Ruses and betrayals are drained of consequence
Their lightness fit to be carried off by wind
All blackness of human life
Is no more than a color
I see this heart on snowy ground, seeking warmth
Turned receptive, like a sheet of rice paper

One Part
——Inscribed on one of my paintings.
Part of my life is here
Hidden stroke by stroke in this painting
I play hide-and-seek with someone
My next life hovers over reincarnating colors
Dreams spread counter to time’s direction
Daytime becomes a crack in the night
Pain in cracks becomes a part of love
Just as love gets used to fading in details
Bowing offstage at home, in a living room
If the cold is part of warmth
Then living is part of dying
All at once the spirit’s blow strikes me
Life imbues shadows with red, yellow green
And I blend life into many shades of green
As I abstract death into pitch darkness

Flames Drifting Down
——For the Hundredth Anniversary of Ai Qing’s birth
Snow fell into your phrases
Giving every sentence a snow-like gleam
A little snowflake was enough to impart
The boundless range that makes a poem filling
For those who partake, even among flames
And you wrote for a flame-beset people
That wagon-driving Chinese farmer
Enduring a blizzard with pulled-down leather cap
Still steps heavily through your verses
Tramping heavily where sunlight falls
And that tousle-headed, grime-faced woman
Has emerged from the thread of your story
To be placed at the mercy of a mercenary knife
Ah, just as the year of 2010 gets underway
Comes another snowfall on Chinese soil
Old debts of history, enfolded in mud,
Turn a page under snow, in a freeze like none before
The mud that sucks at our soles
Jeers as we bustle about in ruins
That flickering lamp over our Sinitic tongue
Has a breath of warmth to give us
You coaxed it into sentences
Along the river of your sighs
As faint light fell on silence of your brow
Flame that snowflakes drifted down to
Because of you, now that a lifespan has passed
Warmth branches out in countless locust blossoms
To grow in the texture of poems
And give faint voice to suffering
That it may be held back from the brink—by life
Wherein greater expanses will be found for the people

There are times, a word
Fall, approaching the far end of a golden October
you gossip away the day, call for
cup after cup of fiery Chinese vodka
the radiance of a poem sinks into your flesh
and sends your heart soaring
some people fly off on the slightest whim
some people feel regret in the middle of a phrase
some people kill with a handfull of borrowed words
a sudden squall falls like a slap in the face
Fall, the softness of this gold will not hold
some people turn to drink to shore up a deception, but then forget
there’re times a single word can lift you up to heaven
or make your life a living death

Woman in Lines
— for a replica of my painting
lines, a woman in Matisse style
turns around, walks with me
into my study, on my bashful paper
colors, stronger than an imaginary storm
flesh and desire
fade away visually
late autumn, hands on the back
side by side with early winter
like two women in cool hues
intrigue shatters joy
seeped into powder, smudged into soft violence of rouge
freeing life at the heart of yellow
